You gotta trust TRYST

menu_flat_r2_c4Shortly after waking up on my day off yesterday, my good friend David sent me a text asking if I wanted to meet up in the afternoon.  By this time, it was already after noon, so that meant getting ready as fast as I could and bolting out of the house.  David suggested meeting up at Tryst Coffeehouse in the Adam’s Morgan neighborhood of DC.

For all those that know me, I do not EVER venture into Adam’s Morgan because it usually always makes me angry and on the verge of hitting someone. Well at least that’s how I am every time I attempt to go there on a Friday or Saturday night.  I will, however, gladly go there in the middle of the afternoon on a weekday to visit one of my favorite coffeeshops.

Tryst as been around for the better part of the last 5 years.  Popping up as one of the best “third wave” coffee shops in the area (read the new GQ magazine to understand what I mean by “third wave”).  They serve good quality coffee drinks brewed to ordered by an actual person and NOT a machine that you just have to push a button in order to operate.  No, these baristas are actual baristas that have taken the time to learn how to prepare a proper cup of latte and cappuccino.  I know I know, I sound like I’m bashing on all the starbucks’ out there.  But I’ve been drinking coffee since I was 6 and consistently since I was 14.  So if I sound like a bit of an elitist when it comes to coffee, well, that’s because I am.  Hell, I practically grew up in the back roasting room of Misha Coffee in Old Town Alexandria, VA. But that’s a whole other story, we’re still talking about Tryst.

While David and I were sitting at the bar drinking our coffee, we decided that we should get something to eat.  So we ask for menus and we both ended up choosing items from the all day brunch section.  He got the plain Belgium Waffles, while I went for one of my favorite breakfast dishes, The Salmon Plate.  Which consisted of smoked salmon,  plain bagel, cream cheese, capers, and onions.  I’m not going to go as far as to say their food is the best, but it is of good quality.  It’s definitely safe to say they concentrate more on their coffee and desserts more so than their food.  If you want good food, just head next door to The Diner (which they own).
