Mie N Yu has been on my radar for a while now. I have been there a few times for drinks, but have never eaten there. I recently got invited by one of their management and got to check out their Blind Tiger Tasting menu. I ended up taking my friend their for his birthday and we had a blast.
We arrived on 8:30 and got seated promptly. Our waiter was quite friendly and gave us quite an impressive speech about the history of Mei N Yu and the Silk Road. I was quite impressed as the story was interesting and historically accurate. After this we got a chance to check out the Blind Tiger menu which I included at the bottom of this post.
We ordered a bottle of Crios de Susana Balbo Cabernet from Argentina which was great choice for the food the followed. We got different appetizers which included Zataar Hummus with Ful and Sunomono Blue Crab Salad. The Zataar Hummus with Ful roasted garlic & zataar hummus, with braised Egyptian fava beans, garlic, tomatoes, lemon, naan bread. This was delicious it was full of flavor from the tomatoes and lemon. I have never had hummus with this much flavor and bite it was really great. The Sunomono Blue Crab Salad of edamame, jumbo lump blue crab, cucumber, Asian greens, pickled quail egg & soba noodles with a rice vinegar dressing. The salad had a nice light crab flavor that mixed well with the greens and dressing. The first course started of the meal just right.
For the second course included my favorite dish of the night which was the Beijing Style Lacquered Duck. The Beijing Style Lacquered Duck included local Pekín duck, mandarin pancakes, scallions, hoisin, cucumber, and chili’s. This duck was by far the best duck ever when you wrapped the pancake around the duck, scallions, and others it tasted so amazing. It was moist and full of flavor. The other dish for the second course was Char Masala Lamb Kabobs included Virginia all natural lamb, charred vegetables, and roasted coriander yogurt. This was good, but did not make me fall in love like the duck did. It had a lot of lamb flavor and when you dipped it in the sauce it tasted pretty good.
For the third and final course we decided to get another bottle as the first one was so good. For the third course my buddy chose the Indonesian Scallop “Kare” and I chose the Indonesian Chicken “Rica Rica”. My
buddies Indonesian Scallop “Kare” which included seared East Coast sea scallops, yellow coconut curry,“Gado – Gado” salad: green beans, quail eggs, potatoes, shrimp chips, and peanut dressing. It was really good the scallops were cooked perfectly which is not easy to find even at the best restaurants. The Indonesian Chicken “Rica Rica” consisted of Shenandoah Valley free range organic chicken, red chili marinade, and pickled vegetables. The chicken was good and had a nice tangy flavor which went nice with the sides.
The decor of Mie and Yu has be the most original decor in all of DC. It takes pieces from all the countries of the Silk Road and applies the decor to a room. Each room is decorated so you actually feel like the country of choice. I have copied the descriptions of each their rooms which you can read about and see it below. Overall Mie N Yu was great the decor, food, and atmosphere was wonderful. I really enjoyed my meal there and I will be going back shortly.
