Cava Mezze
Strolling around Eastern Market yesterday was kind of cool. I would recommend checking out the area around 8th St SE if you haven’t before. There is lots of cool restaurants and bars. So on to Cava Mezze a Greek restaurant settled into the center of Eastern Market. Cava Mezze looks so inviting to customers because it has an open feel. Cava’s menu is kind of like tapas but bigger in that you could probably eat more than one entree but I have found that if you get an appetizer and two entrees its good enough for you and a date.
Cava’s decor and ambiance is great. The restaurant is painted mostly black but has a lot of wood accents making it resemble a wine cellar. It does not feel dark because of the massive amounts of light streaming from outside and throughout the place. The bar is solid wood and stretches about half the length of the restaurant. When me and my girlfriend first got there we sat at the bar.The bartenders at Cava where all very nice. Me and my date started off with a Mythos and a Keo. Mythos is a Greek beer and Keo is a beer from the Greek speaking island of Cypress. Both beers were good but I preferred the Keo. At Cava Mezze’s bar we got a little treat as the brought out some pita bread and dipping sauces to snack on. It was amazing! The pita bread was so soft and the sauces were good as well. The sauces were olive oil, olive dip, and this spicy tomato based Moroccan sauce that was my favorite. After we had this we moved to out table as we figured awkward to eat at the bar. We had planned on eating at the bar but it was kind of uncomfortable for eating as it was pretty high when sitting in the chairs. I am about 5 foot 9 and I was a little uncomfortable trying to eat but my date was about 5 foot 1 so we moved to a table.
We both switched to Keo beer as she liked better as well. The first thing we ordered was Domaldes (5.95) which is grape leaves wrapped around a turkey and rice mix. My grandmother used to make these and its an acquired taste. Cava Mezze’s domaldes tasted just like my grandmas “Delicious”. For our first entree at Cava we had lamb kapama(10.95) which is lamb, orzo(pasta cut into small pieces 3 times the size of rice), cheese, and a tomato sauce. This was my favorite entree. I am a lamb lover and you really got that flavor in every bite. Lastly we had the chicken souflake (9.95) which was great basically two skewers of chicken with lemon and other flavoring. It was great as well.
Overall I really loved Cava Mezze I will definetely be going back and will be recommending it to all my friends. The prices are extremely good for the food. I have finally found a Greek place in DC that gives great quality food at a decent price.
